CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

A ball of light formed in Mirari’s hands, bright and delicate like a sunflower. She caressed it in her cupped palms. Kylah gently guided her.

“That’s amazing!” Mirari was awed. The rumors said the Witch of Aten was an expert spellcaster, and Mirari believed them now. From firecracker fingers to object levitation, even making water taste like wine, Kylah showed off her skills to Mirari, using her kore to create the impossible.

Mirari was never able to do much with kore. After Joachim trained her, the most she could do was swipe wind and cast barriers. It was simply not in her blood. The Hales were aristocrats; few practiced the ways of a fighter, and their ability to link their aura with nature gradually diminished generation after generation. Even if Mirari practiced her kore for the rest of her life, there was a limit to how much she could improve.

“There are some skills that don’t require a lot of kore,” Kylah explained. “Even with low kore affinity, you can win a battle if you play smart.”

Kylah raised one hand above Mirari’s ball of light. It followed her hand and stretched upward like taffy, then pulled apart into a dozen smaller strands of light, all straight and pointing at Kylah’s hand. If they weren’t glowing, Mirari would’ve thought they were raw spaghetti.

“Sit up straight,” Kylah instructed, and Mirari quickly adjusted her position. “Now close your eyes and imagine you are one of these strands.”

“Close my eyes?” She was excited to see the dancing light in front of her.

“Do it.”

Kylah’s sharp tone reminded her of Joachim when he tried to teach her how to use kore. He told her that kores were like personalities. Gaven and Salathiel were headstrong, determined and full of pride. It came to no surprise that their auras resonated with the earth.

But Mirari was shocked when wind spiraled from her hand. She was confident – based on her fiery incident on the kōnvoy and in the forest – that her kore was something more destructive. Being able to use more than one type was unheard of, unless one was naturally talented like Kylah.

Then, why was she able to unleash fire?

With complete trust in her retainer and desperation for the truth, Mirari told Joachim her secret – how she believed she was the one who caused the fire on the kōnvoy that took her parents’ life. Joachim didn’t believe her, but he neither laughed nor questioned it. He didn’t know what started the fire, but he took one look at her aura, and knew it was impossible for her to have been responsible for it.

“Though it is shallow, you are gentle and nimble like the wind,” he said. “Fire is as impulsive as it is destructive… It’s not your style.”

But Mirari knew Salathiel wouldn’t lie, especially not about what happened that day she set the forest on fire. So, where was this ability? And why couldn’t she control it?

“Back straight,” Kylah repeated. Her words dragged Mirari back to reality, and Mirari gathered hope once again.
